z428 log

Lost in transit.
Moving.
Returning.
You're welcome.

Technology and some fresh paint.

Haven't been writing about my numerous weblogs, sinks, accounts and all that mess in a while, but given some of the recent changes, maybe it's not too bad to sum this up once again. So, here we are in early 2026, always subject to change of course:

  • Friendica has failed to match my ideas and concepts. And at the moment it seems this part of the Fediverse is finally history for me. I've been mainly, not to say exclusively, on Friendica ever since early 2021 and still very much enjoy a lot of the features this server software provides. But failing performance-wise in at least three accounts in a row, running into the same situation of channels, circles, profiles slowing down, posts coming from connectors (Tumblr) being delayed by weeks and eventually at some point both smaller or larger instances running into unexpected states of being more or less unusable, I guess I learnt my lesson here. Friendica is cool, but somehow there are things about how I use it that cause it to not be a good, viable, working choice for me. I'm still keeping the quietmoon instance around until late summer but most likely retire it by then. Given the problems I'm seeing on Friendica apparently are problems no one else except me is experiencing, I won't even remotely dare to start over with a new account on another instance housing more users than just me, and for my single-user instance, this idea of being that sole node to keep my blogging as well as staying connected to people all over the 'net has effectively proven to not work out. I don't assume or expect any of these to be fixed at any point in time and I don't want to bother anyone with these anymore.
  • Consequently though, everything else gets messier to stay in touch. I'm excessively using POSSE these days, using a handcrafted script snippet to connect to Tumblr still, as well as Hubzilla to stay in touch with my Diaspora* friends, a modified variant of the bludit-mastodon-plugin to connect my status blog to the Fediverse directly, and echofeed for everything else. This is annoying on many different levels, even more so given it's not about interacting with proprietary walled gardens (where cross-posting stuff might be the only viable solution) but actually about trying to stay in touch with people on different open social networks but apparently it always comes back to this and there's no real incentive to come up with sane interoperability and sometimes and in some moments I'm somewhere in between angry, disappointed and disillusioned talking about open technologies. But this is a rabbit hole not to disappear in, right now.
  • Most of my stuff currently lives on more or less modified variants of Bludit. Took a brief test drive with Kirby in between but it has proven to be way too complex and powerful for my needs at the moment; Bludit and its plugins is about the right size of code I'm able to wrestle, resorting to my somewhat rusty PHP skills and development infrastructure at hand. Maybe at some point it's about sticking with what works. Maybe, in this field of technology, too, it's crucial to accept and understand there's a shiny new thing out there every other week and there's months that could just be spent on changing base technology, frameworks, servers, tools. Which is inspiring from a technical perspective, of course, but provides little benefit asides that.
  • At the moment, there are several blogs operated this way: status.z428.eu is my main field of daily deviations, at the moment, though, limited to text. I kept images in there for quite a while but at the moment it somehow doesn't feel quite right to do that. frame.z428.eu takes some of that imaging stuff and is an attempt to reproduce (for me, personally) that early Instagram feeling of just posting images, without too much clutter or context. pixels.z428.eu is for image galleries, initially thought to house stuff shot on more obscure devices like the Camp Snap Camera, but I noticed I'm lacking a good place for keeping posts with more than one picture. Ah and there's of course log.z428.eu which is ... well I don't know.
  • Adding to that, I'm still part of the omg.lol community, mostly using Mastodon there, but also keeping my #365moments pictures and some other more arcane, random smartphone shots on some.pics, leaving status logs then and now and, of course, using the landing page to keep things somehow sorted.

There's still a lot of tinkering in that. There are wagonloads of unaddressed odds and ends. And at the moment I'm more into trying and cutting these things to size, rather than letting them grow even more, and pondering different options to do so. But at least sometimes checking back and browsing, cleaning, sorting ones own inventory does help, at least to get some clarity. Even knowing there'll always be a bit more work to be done to handle all this (and knowing I ought to be grateful for being able to do all of that, after all).
